Also known as a tall case clock or Grandfather clock, this refers to a clock that stands on the floor. They usually measure 6-7’ tall. It is a type of weight-driven pendulum clock generally requiring winding weekly or daily, depending on the type of movement. The first known example of a grandfather clock was in the mid-17th century. There are shorter versions know as grandmother (also known as dwarf) clocks that stand somewhere in the 5’ range and even shorter versions known as granddaughter clocks that stand 3.5’-4.5’ tall.
